A collection of essays covering fifteen years of research. The figure of the violinist and composer that emerges substantially modifies and completes the traditional view. Instead of harping on groundless legends (e.g. the "Devil's Trill" Sonata), the author relates Tartini's position to the cultural tendencies of his day, with specific reference to his writings and the music itself. The following areas are thus probed: his aesthetic theories, his school of violin playing, his views on instrument building, his attitude to popular music; the relationship between his music and contemporary vocal production; the origin of his style, with particular reference to Corelli.
