Corelli and Vitali: On the Reworking of Dance Movements

Stylistic characteristics of Corelli’s music are to be recognized by comparison with the music of his fellow composers. A special opportunity for such comparison can be found in compositions by Corelli that re-work musical material by other composers. This paper concentrates on dance movements from Corelli’s Op. II (1685) and Giovanni Battista Vitali’s Op. VIII (1683). There is one clear example of reworking that will serve as a starting point for the comparison.
