This research is about music analysis and its use in the preparation for a music performance. The focus of the study is related to the strategies applied while preparing for a performance. The aim is to understand the role and importance of analysis in the study behaviour of the musicians and to identify which other procedures are implied in it; an analysis was made of the relationship between the pianist and the structural and expressive contents that the pianist finds in the score and their transformations into sound during the execution. A first pilot study involved 20 pianists who were presented with a wide range of study strategies in order to better understand the relation between analytical activities and other types of activities strictly related to the score. Subsequently a questionnaire containing 29 questions was prepared. The participants consisted of 53 professional Italian pianists who received the questionnaire via email. The results obtained are divided into three areas of study: the attention/time dedicated to the analysis when learning the composition, the type of analysis applied and the value given to it in their cultural sphere.
