The present contribution aims to reconsider Ildebrando Pizzetti’s relationship with Greek tragedy from a musical and dramaturgical point of view, taking into consideration not only his compositions on Greek tragic subjects but also his writings on the history and theory of music. The results of the investigation suggest to read this relationship in a dynamic manner, especially in relation to the specific needs posed by his activity as a composer: not in terms of archaeological restoration, but rather as an original and creative rethinking.
He teaches Greek language and literature at the University of Cassino. His study and research interests focus mainly on fifth-century Attic theatre, and in particular on old comedy and satyr drama; on archaic and late-archaic lyric; on Greek metric and music, and on the reception of the classical world in the history of European culture, with particular reference to the domain of music. Since 2011 he is co-director of the journal «Seminari Romani di Cultura Greca». He has published an edition with commentary of Euripides’ Cyclops (2003) and an annotated edition of the fragments of Eupolis’ Kolakes (2012). Since 2012 he has been writing articles on music in the on-line magazine of the Enciclopedia Treccani, partially collected in 2016 (Cadenze d’inganno). Since December 2013, he has served on the board of directors of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana.
