This volume presents a guide to the “manufacture” of open electronic musical instruments oriented towards sound design and electronic sound arts. It is hoped that this will put the reader in a position to be able to tackle a technological practice aimed at self-building electronic musical instruments. The research, technological and musical activity presented in the volume finds its place on the one hand in a field of studies and practices aimed at creating self-built electronic musical instruments called synth DIY (Do It Yourself); on the other hand, in that vast universe that can be briefly identified through the name, unfortunately still not so widespread today, of Sound Arts.

The basic hypothesis that inspired the entire work is to think that in order to create open “instruments” in which to channel and verify compositional, musical and technological choices and hypotheses it is necessary for a composer and/or an artist who uses technological means to develop and know as much as possible the tools of their own compositional and creative action in a research process that is both scientific and technological on one hand, artistic and musical on the other.
