Il Fondo Gesualdo della Biblioteca Provinciale di Avellino

The Biblioteca Provinciale of Avellino has recently instituted the Centro Studi e Documentazione “Carlo Gesualdo“. This organism collects a considerable fund, made available after long researches promoted by the Biblioteca itself and by the Provincia of Avellino, and realized by the historian Annibale Cogliano.

The Centro Studi, under further enlargement, presents materials, prevalently unpublished, that come from different archives: Archivio di Stato of Modena, Archivio Segreto Vaticano, Archivio di Stato of Napoli, Archivio di Stato of Avellino, Archivio di Stato of Simancos (Spain).

This rich documentation focused on Gesualdo’s family, presents heterogeneous materials: legates, lawsuits, donations, letters and so on. It is an incredible heritage of information, extremely useful in order to place in historical, social and cultural context not only the Gesualdo’s family, but also the political and institutional aspects of that age.

My research intends to individuate, through the large informative stitches of the fund, the argumentations and the problems about the Principe of Venosa, his music, and the persons in his circle of relationships.
