Kyrie e Credo nel secondo fascicolo del codex St. Emmeram

This chapter focuses on the excerpts from the Mass Ordinary transmitted in the second fascicle of the codex St. Emmeram (Munich, Bayerische Staats­bibliothek, Clm 14274), which was the first to be copied, around 1430. First, five Credos are copied in black mensural notation, i.e. in cantus fractus (fol. 13^r to fol. 20^v), then two Kyries in normal plainchant, followed by a short Kyrie in cantus fractus, a Kyrie in three voices (interpolated later) and finally two more Kyries, one in plainchant, the other mensural. Careful analysis of the musical and textual writing of the fascicle leads to the attribution of these pieces to the hand of the main copyist: Hermann Pötzlinger. The hypothesis is that the dossier represents the very initial core of the collection, which Pötzlinger started in the years when he was succentor (i.e. assistant teacher) of some school­master near Regensburg, perhaps in the monastery of St. Emmeram. The scholastic purpose of these pieces, all of which are provided here in modern editions, is demonstrated by the melodic and rhythmic characteristics of the pieces, whose structure, concordances and distribution are analysed.
