Through an historical-analytical approach, the article focuses on solo and ensemble violin music produced in Rome in the decades 1650-1670. The stylistic heterogeneity of these sonatas and the problems of their transmission, generally through incomplete manuscript copies, have so far discouraged scholars from surveying them: thus, a comprehensive study on the features of Roman violin music of the pre-corellian era is still unavailable. It is certainly hard to include these compositions and the profiles of composers such as Leoni, Stradella, Lonati, Mannelli in the all-embracing label of “Roman violinism”. Nevertheless, a detailed analysis of the instrumental writing and formal structures of the pieces allows us to better specify some peculiarities of violin music in the Roman context and, at the same time, to better understand how the contribution of the «più valorosi professori musici di Roma [most eminent musicians in Rome]» influenced Corelli’s style.
