The need to enlarge the Conservatory in Pescara has been decisive to start a consideration on what a music school means today. Some questions have been raised about the role of culture in the development of a community and, even more urgently, has been questioned which project and which planning would best suit the building of appropriate places for music, shows and social integration with the city, in order to create productive exchange and cultural growth.
If education, in general, must provide the adequate competences in order to find a job, artistic education, more specifically, must challenge itself with artistic and musical knowledge in a fast and unrelenting changing society.
It consists of facing problems, probably new and different, that refer not only to the kind of competences that must be provided, but also to the cultural heritage that has to be disseminated and/or exchanged in both a multiethnic and multicultural society. Those who deal with the city’s project have to think about the way space can be employed, about its role that must be ‘social’ more than economic and/or formal; in the age of ‘networks’ may there be a ‘polis’, a new community, outside networks or in a different ‘network’, characterized by those ‘accountabilities’ which are currently lacking?
Furthermore, it means planning in a sustainable way from an economic, social and environmental point of view. Therefore a discussion can be engaged starting from these prerequisites in order to build a ‘new place’ for musical teaching, production and research.
Specific attention must be paid to the ‘management’ of the building and to the configuration of its space by means of technological innovations, that is to say a modular and flexible system that can be converted according to multiple situations that may require not only different dimensions/volumes, but also acoustic and formal configurations which are suitable to various show suggestions. It derives from a program that, starting from the need of building enlargement, achieves a wide and cultural city-integrated system, aiming at the creation of a ‘musical district’ and, mostly, at its endurance over the years.
