Pietro Marchitelli occupy a central role in the development of string music in eighteenth-century Naples. Leader of the Royal Chapel for more than thirty years, employed in the most important music institutions of the city, and forerunner of a generation of musicians all coming like him from the town of Villa Santa Maria (Mascitti, the Sabatino) for whom he was a mentor and model, Marchitelli was also among the most prolific composers of violin sonatas. Thus far the collections attributed to him included two sonatas printed by Roger and about twenty-five sonatas mostly in incomplete manuscript collection. The recent discovery of two manuscripts containing ten new sonatas is particularly significant as these appear in a complete set.
