The portrait of a Kapellmeister from the Kuenburg collection of gouaches, tentatively identified as Luigi Gatti, has long been regarded as the only known portrait of the composer, then serving as chapel master to archbishop Colloredo in Salzburg. Another one, newly discovered, is an eighteenth-century painting depicting an unknown musician, formerly in the possession of Francesco Gatti, Luigi’s nephew and heir, and now at the Museo di Palazzo Ducale, Mantua, which allows comparisons with the portrait of the Kuenburg collection.
